The study was done at La Platina Experiment Station (INIA, Santiago) during the 1981/82 season. The treatments ere defined as 1 .3, 1 .0, 0.7 and 0.3 times the pan evaporation (class A) and were arranged in comple-tly randomized blocks, with three replications. Results indicated that pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants are affected when theair space of the sol) is below 16%. Yield, dry matter root development, nitrogen content and chlorophyll content diminished when excessive water was applied (1.0 x pan evaporation or more). A yield reduction was observed under water deficit (0.3 x pan evaporation). The major concentration of roots wes in the first 30 cm of the soil.
