Seed samples of cultivar Mexifen from field plots under different nitrogen potassium fertilizer treatments and aphid attack (Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum) were analysed for aphids affect on the germination ability of the seed and on its nutritive value and baking properties. the experiments were performed at the Quilamapu Experiment Station (Chillan) during 1971, 1972 and 1974.
Germination capacity was determined in a germinator. Kernel nutritive value was evaluated as protein content and baking quality through the Pelshenke test. Also determined on these samples were microsedimentation value, loaf volume, water absorption rate, grain hardness color and crumb texture.
No detectable effects due to aphid attack were observed on the germinating ability, nutritive value, and baking properties of wheat samples analysed. Total protein yield per hectare and hectoliter weight were reduced.
Nitrogen fertility increased grain protein percentage as well as total protein yield per hectare. This element imporved milling and baking quality as it increased water absorption, loaf volume, crumb texture, microsedimentation value and Pelshenke's value. Grain hardness, crumb color and hectoliter weight were not affected.
Potassium affected only microsedimentation values. This paper discusses some of the factors involved in the wheat plant that might have been modified by the variables under study.
