During four consecutive seasons forage production from a oat (fall-winter) and maize (spring-summer) crop sequence was evaluated. Crops were sown and harvested at different dates and the same site was used every year. The combination of sowing and harvesting dates (4) of the crops and corn varieties (2) originated 8 treatments. A randomized block design with 4 replicates was used. forage production from oats depends mainly on harvesting date with a maximum yield when cut in November, dry matter (D.M.) production ranged from 7 to 12 ton/ha. Tow corn hybrids were used (early and late maturing). The early maturing hybrid produced from 8 to 12 ton D.M./ha an the late hybrid from 11-18 ton D.M./ha. Maximun yield was reached when sowing occurred on October 18 and November 6. The maximum total yield of the sequence corn oat was 30 ton D.M/ha. Total crude protein production ranged from 1,092 to 1,968 kg/ha, with oats contributing from 23-47% of the total. Metabolizable energy production ranged from 44,403 to 67,153 mcal/ha with oats contributing from 31 to 48%. |
