An experiment was carried out during two years at Human Experiment Substation Los Angeles, Chile, to determine the best form of combining the same forage (Trifolium pratense L. cv. Quiñequeli), conserved as silage or hay, with dry sugar beet pulp for winter milk production. European Holstein cows were randomly assigned to the followings treatments in aSwitch-Back Design: 1. Hay ad líbitum plus 5 Kg dry sugar beet pulp. 2. Silage ad líbitum plus 5 Kg dry sugar beet pulp.
3. Silage ad líbitum plus 5 Kg red clover hay. Milk production with treatment 1 was 22 and 30% higher (P < 0.05) than with treatments 2 and 3, respectively. During both years, dry matter intake with treatment 1 was higher (P < 0.05) than with the other two treatments. Similar milk productions were obtained with either dry sugar beet pulp or with red clover hay, when both feeds were supplemented with clover silage ad líbitum. The edible dry matter producer per hectare when forage was harvested as hay was 19% higher than when harvested as silage. |
