| Yield and quality of garlic (Valenciano Rosado) was studied at La Platina Experimental Station. Nitrogen was applied at 0 - 75 - 150 and 225 Kg/ha of N as chilean nitrate (sodium-potassium nitrate, 15% N) with four different plant populatiom: 500.000 - 666.000 - 1.000.000 and 1.333.000 plants per ha. Yield was affected by a significant interaction between nitrogen level and plant population. Maximun yield and quality (size) of garlic bulbs was obtained with 150 Kg of N and 1.000.000 plants per ha. Yield and size of bulbs increased when 666.000 plants /ha or more were fertilized, particularIy with 150 and 225 Kg of N/ha. High plant population, i. e. 1.000.000 or 1.333.000 plants/ha improved total yield but size of bulbs decreased. When low populations were fertilized with the different nitrogen levels, ranges of 7.4 to 12 ton/ha, were harvested, with 65 to 85% of marketable production. |
