Deficiencies of nutritional elements in soil samples from the province of Chiloe were determined in 43 pot experiments with Lolium perenne X Lolium multiflorum. Deficiency in phosphorus and potassium predominated. Particularly, phosphorus deficiency was characteristic in every type of soil examined, with no exception the fertility diagram assigned maximum weight to potassium deficiency, although in didn't appear in all samples. Soils where there was low available phosphorus and potassium jointly with one or more severe scarcity ofmagnesium, sulphur, calcium and/or micronutrients were numerous.
The differences observed among fertility diagrams were attributed, mainly, to the nature of the generating material, influence of rainfall and temperature being less important. Association between fertility lines, and organic matter content and soil pH -from pH 3.7 (KCl) to 4.6- could not be stated, nor was it observed that the smallest calcium availabilities were always related to soils with lowest pH's. Deficiency symptoms for potassium, phosphorus, sulphur, magnesium and calcium appeared clearly in some of the samples, on the corresponding treatments. On the equations for the respective fertility lines of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulphur and micronutrients, the average values determined for A were: 37.6; 32.8; 91.7; 93.0; 83.3; and 93.1; for m: -0.01348; -0.01675; -0.00021; -0.00916; -0.00642 and -0.00649, respectively.
