Performance of two shallot cultivars (Allium cepa var. cepa) atfive planting dates.l. Factors related to growth and plant development

The evolution of somee growth and development components of two Jersey shallot cultivars, in fiveplanting dates, was studied at La Platina Experimental Station (INIA). The trials were set in a split plotdesign with four replications. The treatments were the two cultivars: Jermor and Limador. Thesubtreatments were the five planting dates: June 23, July 22, August 22, September 26 and October25, 1988.
The response curves to number of leaves, aerial part dry weight, Bulb formation index (BFI), diameterof bulbs per plant and number of bulbs per plant, are presented, and they were obtained takingsamplesevery two weeks.
As the planting dates was delayed in both cultivars, the maximum number and length of leaves tendedto decrease, while the average diameter of bulbs per plant remained relatively stable. Concerning thenumber of bulb per plant, the two earliest planting dates were the best, Jermor being better thanLimador.Vegetative period of both cultivars became shorter as the planting dates were delayed, fluctuating from215 to 133 days.
