Presence of red rice in Chile

Red rice could become a serious weed pest in chilean rice fields because its presence reduce themarket value of commercial rice. During the 1988/89 growing season, in 13 rice fields, rice typesdifferent to the variety sown were collected. In addition, in 1990 two important rice mills were checkedfor red rice. The results confirmed that some of the rice types collected were red rice with differentmorphological characters, with and without coloured awns, variable coloured collar and colourednode. Only short and medium grain were observed and some ofthe red rice presentad red endosperm.The survey indicated that red rice is present throughout the rice growing area and that medium grainwas more infested than long grain types. The red rice range varied from 0.02% to 4.12% in infestedmills samples.
