Four wheat trials held in the coastal (non irrigated) area of the VI Region, with a Mediterranean type hydric regime and very high winter rains, and on a soil with a high capacity ofwater retention, showed the following results:
- In very rainy years, varieties with short developing periods, sowed early in autumn, had low yields, due to the attack of septoria and, possibly, other fungus diseases.
- In years with dry springs, varieties with a long developing period, had lowyields, even when sowed early.
- In very dry or very humid years, yields of all types of varieties were low.
The most reliable years are those with a relatively dry winter (Iess than 500 mm) and some rains in spring.
The most recommendable practices is to use intermediate type varieties, sowed before June 15, or early type varieties, sowed afier May15 and before June 15. Underthese conditions, yields will be between 3,000 and 6,000 kg/ha, according the pluviometry of the spring.
