Huinca-INIA is a new alfalfa cultivar, originated from a German germplasm, at the Carillanca Experimental Station (Temuco, Chile). It is a dormant variety, very active in spring and summer, well adapted to the irrigated and dryland conditions of the IX Región (southern zone), and to the irrigated Central Valle.y of the VIII Region (south-central zone) of Chile. Huinca-INIA has a semi-erect plant, with a height of 80 to 90 cm at full flowering. Its flowers' colour is predominantly purple (70%) and 30% of them are light violette and/or variegated. It has a good leaflstem ratio. It yields, as an average, 12 ton (4 seasons) and 6,7 ton D.M./ha (3 seasonsl, under irrigated and dryland conditions, respectively. This new cultivar has a good persistence (similar to Palihue-INIA), due to its resistance (72 %) to stem nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci) significantly higher than other 25 cultivars. This is reflected in its yield and plant population, through the years.
