The average yield, hectoliter weight, insect and disease incidence of several hundreds varieties, studied each year in yield tests at La Platina Exp. Sta. (INlA, Santiago), in the period 1965-1986, are presented. Rainfall and the sums of temperatures above 5ºC, in different growing periods, are also given. Average yields fluctuated between 26 quintals/hectare, in 1977, and 92.1, in 1981. Hectoliter weights varied from 75.0, in 1975, and 84.6 kg/hl, in 1966. A very important factor was the delay in the date of sowing, that affected yields between Oand 18 quintals/hectare, with and average for the period of 7.4. The reduction in yield produced by the diminution of the hectoliter weight, due to diseases and other factors, was analysed. Some years there was no loss due to this cause, while in others there was a loss up to 18.6 quintals/hactare, with an average for the period of 7.5. The main cause of the decrease in yield and hectoliter weight, was the BYDV incidence. The rusts produced important losses, in four years. Root rot diseases had great importance, in two years. Lodging seriously affected yield and hectoliter weight, in two years.
