Two experiments were conducted at the Carillanca Experimental Station (INIA-Temuco), to evaluate by-products of peas and compare them with a rapeseed bran-fish meal mixture, as the protein source in a starter concentrate for dairy calves. In trial 1, 32 spring-borne calves were reared up to 120 days of age, and in trial 2, 20 autumn-borne calves, up to 90 days of age. Concentrates were fed ad libitum, in both trials. There were no statistical differences in liveweight gains and intakes, between concentrate treatments, but the autumn calves gained less weight during the whole trial. It was concluded that peas by-products can replace completely the other mixture as the protein source, without affecting feed intake and daily Iiveweight gain.
