On October 1987, in wheat fields at the La Platina Exp. Sta. (INIA, Santiago), a new aphid species was detected. According to its morphological characteristics and plant symptomatology, and the pertinent bibliographical information, this species was identified as Diuraphis noxia Mordvilko. This identification was later confirmed by the entomologist Dr. Enrique Zúñiga S., from the La Cruz Biological Control Experimental Substation (INIA). In several countries, D. noxia is a parasite on wheat and barley mainly, and it is also found on other gramineous species. This is the first time this species has been detected in Chile.
