Claudio Rojas G.1 y Leonardo Carrasco D.1

Th irty spring born Hereford young steers, with an average body weight of 220 kg and 7 to 8 months of age, were used to improve their gains. The experimental period began in june 14,1984 in sem iroofed pens with warm beds. The animals had a supplementation (D.M. basis) with silage plus 0.0%(T1), 10%(T2), 20%(T3), 30%(T4) and 40%(T5) of lupin grain. Minerals were included in 3% for all groups of animals. The experimental design was randomized blocks. Daily gains were 0.074 d; 0.550 c; 0.714 bc; 0.841 ab and 0.965 a kg (P < 0.05) for T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5, respectively. Dry matter intake were 4.4; 5.2; 5.6; 5.9; and 7.0 kg/d and the efficiencies of feed conversion were 59.0; 9.5; 7.9; 7.1; and 7.2 kg dry matter intake per kg liveweight, for the same treatments.
