Information is given on changes in behaviour of wheat cultivars in different seasons. In some seasons, these changes are due to changes in the prevalent disease strains, while in other seasons, they may be due to a differential response of the cultivars to changes in climatic conditions. To reduce the effect of these changes, the possibility of using cultivars' mixtures was studied. In 1983/84 and 1984185, yield trials were stablished at the La Platina Exp. Sta. (INIA, Santiago), comparing mixtures with commercial varieties. Results indicated that it is possible to obtain cultivars' mixtures with adequate uniformity for practical acceptance by farmers, and with a more stable yield performance, in front of changes in biological and/or climatic conditions.
