Barley trials were set up to compare cultivars and study its seeding dates, at the Puyehue Research Field, Cañete, Chile (Iat. 37º 54' S) during 1979 and 1980. The results indicated that spring barley has good adaptation under the dryland conditions of the Arauco Province. The average grain yield was 3,700 kg/ha, but some cultivars exceeded 6,000 kg/ha. The most important diseases were scald for seeding dates earl ier than August, and brown rust, for late seeding dates. In relation to seeding dates, it was concluded that the highest grain yields are obtained when barley is sown during August; nevertheless, good yields can also be reached with sowings between July and September.
