Potato trials at the La Platina Experimental Station (INIA, Santiago) showed an early dying syndrome. Symptoms began with foliage wilting. The leaflets first turned yellow, later became brownish, and finally died. Symptoms started at the tip and gradually reached the bottom of the plants. Stolons and roots showed abundant sclerotia; their cortical tissue peeled off easily and an amethyst color developed. Colletotrichum atramentarium was isolated from the affected plants and successfully inoculated in to roots, of potato plants. This is the first time the fungus has been reported for Chile.
