An experiment was established, using ‘Pomona’ budded on seedlings of the same cultivar, in June 1978, at La Platina Experimental Station (INIA-Santiago). Plants, randomly distributed in the orchard, were weighed and their trunk diameter measured, before planting. Trunk diameter was also measured at the end of the first and second year in the orchard. Initial weight (the independant variable) was regressed over tree growth (dependant variable), measured as increase in trunk diameter, at the end of the first two years of establishment in the orchard. Initial weight varied from 85 to 1665 g/plant and showed a negative and significative regression coetíicient with tree growth at the end of the second year of establishment in the orchard (Y = 31.2 - 0.11 x; R2 = 0.29; F = 46.7). This is en indication that larger plants have a slight tendency to grow Iess during their first two years of esta blishment in the orchard.
