The effect of aphid populations on cereal production was studied from 1976 to 1985, in three regions: Santiago (central zone), Chillán (south-central zone) and Temuco (southern zone). The susceptibility of different plant growth stages, with variable aphid densities per tiller, was determined. The effect of the sowing date in relation to aphid population was also evaluated. The aphids, on wheat and barley, during the period between first leaf and flag leaf produced the larger losses in yield. Delaying the sowing date produced a yield reduction in the three localities.
