Field trials were conducted at the La Platina Experimental Station (INIA, Santiago), between the 1982/83 and 1985/86 seasons. It was determined that the most effective method for chemical control was the slurry seed dressing, no matter the insecticide applied. Products such as Carbaryl, Diazinon and Clorpirifos, used at rates as low as 0.5 g of AI./kg of seed, produced a significant increase in the number of surviving plants and in yield, in the season with the heaviest infestation (1985/86). Also, in that season, yield losses of nearly 80% occurred in non-protected treatments. During the season 1983/84, phytotoxicity was observed with all the insecticides used, when the products were applied 96 hr befare sowing.
