The behaviour of five lentil varieties (Laird, Tekoa, Araucana-INIA, L-6393,and L-6392),with different levels of susceptibility to rust, was studied during the 1981/82 and 1982/83 seasons, in the coastal dryland area of the VI Region of Chile. The effect of the pathogen on each variety, was measured by the difference betweenthe yield of plots permanently protected by a fungicide and that of test-plots, with no protection. Rust reduced yleld of susceptible varieties (Araucana-INIA, L-6393 and L-6392) from 24 to 70%. Tekoa and Laird behaved as resistant and immune, respectively, and their yields were not affected.
