During the 1982/83 season, a disease on chickpea was detected in the dry-land coastal area of the V Region of Chile. Plants showed necrosis and blight on terminal stems and branches; Ihen, thesesymptoms progressed and affected other parts of the plants. Cankers and sclerotia were also seen on affected stems. Severey affeoted plants ultimately collapsed enterely. When humidity was low, irregular brown spots on the leaves were observed. Botrytis cinerea Pers. was consistently isolated from plants showing the aboye symptoms. The fungus grew profusely on PDA and sclerotial bodies were formed on the culture. Chickpea seedlings of approximately two weeks oid were artificially inoculated with a spore suspension of the fungus, and consequently fleld symptoms were reproduced. B. cinerea was consistently recovered from the inoculated piants.
