A trial was established at La Platina Experiment Station (INIA), Santiago, Chile, to determine if the 2.0 m x 0.9 m plots used in the yie(d trials were giving a satisfactory information for the selection of the better yielding wheat (mes and cultivars of the Wheat lmprovement Program. Twelve wheat cultivars were used in a trial with 4.0 m x 1 . m plots, in a complete randomized design with five replications. Each plot was subdivided in four 2.0 m x 0.9 m subplots (1, 2, 3, and 4). Results were analyzed separately for the yields in each subplot, the yields resulting from combining subplots 1 + 2 and 3 + 4, and that of the complete plots (1 ÷ 2 + 3 + 4). Comparing the ordering of the varieties according o their ‘ield in each alternative, it was concluded that the 2.0 m x 0.9 m plots in use are giving a satisfactory information on yield, for the purpose of selecting good yielders among 1.000 plus entries tried in each season at La Platina.
