The classical as well as the natural biological control of insect pests is a strategy that has been ac quiring more importance every day, mainly from an integrated pest management point of view. ln this article, the evolution, the importance and the use of biological control, as a modern rnethod to manage insect pests, are analyzed. Comparisons with other control methods and also sorne results of biological control programrnes, applied in Chile against sorne important insect pests, are given.
