During the 1972/1973, 1973/1974 and 1974/1975 growing seasons, 20 N P fertilization trials were set up in flooded rice fields, located in the Talca, Linares and Ñuble provinces. Nine experiments were selected to relate the rate of nitrogen application with sorne agronornic characteristics. The increase in applied nitrogen increased dry rnatter production, spikelet sterility and height. The efficiency of the nitrogen fertilizer (kg rice/kg applied N) decreased n soils subjected to dry periods during the plant development season, and when the amount of nitrogen applied was increased.
