Puccinía striiformis f. sp. hordei was determined in Chile in 1978, when the Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA) started surveying annually barley diseases in the area between Vallenar (28º35’ S) and Chilod (43º00’ S). In 1980 a strong attack of barley yellow rust “strain 24” on commercial fields of barley was detected in the IV Region (Ovalle). This disease appeared in Colombia in 1975; in 1976 it was reported active in Ecuador; and in 1978 there was a severe attack in Peru, from the Sierra Central to the South.
