A greenhouse experiment was carried out at La Platina Experiment Station (INIA), Santiago, to evaluate the reaction of tomato cultivars ACE 55VF, RONITA, ROSSOL, PAKMOR, VEN BUSH, CAL ACE and VFN-8 in an artificially infested soil with high M. incognita populations. This soil came from a field recently used for potato production and artificially re-infested by successive seedings with a susceptible tomate variety. Varietal response was evaluated using the root-knot index system and by counting the number of dead plants after emergency. According te the root--knot index, the cultivars RONITA, VEN-8, ROSSOL, and VFN BUSH were resistant. CAL ACE was tolerant. PAKMOR and ACE 55VF were highly susceptible. The number of dead plants after emergency was not ta, since the tomato plants were severely affected by Fusarium sp and Pythium sp. a good base fo evaluate resistance to M. incognita, since the tomato plants were severely affected by Fusarium sp and Pythium sp.
