The effect of phosphorus fertilization on growth and nitrogen content of legumes grown on a trumao soil, with high phosphorus retention capacity, was studied under greenhouse conditions. Dry matter yields increased steadily, but not signifi cantly, when applying up to 316 Kg of P2O5 per hectare. Higher dosis, up to 10.000 Kg, yielded highly significant differences (P < 0,01), without noticea ble toxicity. A similar tendency was observed in total nitrogen content of the aeriarparts of the four legu mes: phosphorus deficiency caused an abnormal increase in percerit of nitrogen content, which beca me normal only aboye 316 Kg of P2O5 per hectare. The four legume species tested did no differ in their response to phosphorus applications.
