ABSTRACT
Garbage compost as an organic fertilizer source, compared with chemical fertilization. Second cycle

A second cycle of data from a long term field experiment designed to compare organic vs. chemical (urea) nitrogen applied to vegetables is reported. With the only exception of green beans, all the other vegetables tested (tomato, lettuce, corn, radish, spinach, cabbage and beets) showed a better response to chemical nitrogen, despite the increase of soil organic matter observed in those plots supplied with compost. Nevertheless, an improved response to organic fertilization was detected during this second crop cycle, as compared to the first cycle (four years each).
