In 1977 and 1978, trials were conducted at La Platina Experimental Station (INIA), in arder to determine the effect of BYDV and the aphid M. dirhodum on wheat cv. Toquifén, under cages protected with muslin. Inboth seasons, results were similar and significant reductions yield were detected when wheat was inoculated with BYDV, between stages 5 and 7 of the Feekes scale. Also, it was shown that BYDV causes reduction in kernel weight, number of kernels per spike and plant height, and an increase of the percentage of the shriveled kernels. An increase in number of viruliferous aphids did not mean yield reductions. Large populations of non viruliferous aphids durin the same growth stages, did not reduce yield significantly.
