IDENTIFICATION OF THE STEM AND BULB NEMATODE Ditylenchus dipsaci (KÜHN) FILIPJEV AND PERCENTAGE OF INFESTATION ON GARLIC (Allium sativum L.) AND ONION (Allium cepa L.)

A survey was carried out during 1979/80 with the specific purpose of identification and evaluation of the main plant diseases affecing garlic and onion in the V Region and Region Metropolitana, Chile.
Laboratory examination of soil and plant samples, indieated that stemand bulb nematode, Ditylenchus dipsaci, is one of the main diseases on both crops.
This nematode is distributed in areas of Llaillay, Catemu, San Felipe and Los Andes, within the V Region, and in areas of Colina, Pudahuel and Pirque, in Region Metropolitana.
The degree of soil infestation in the V Region is very heavy and the pereentage of diseased plants in the field gave an average of 30% for onion and 35% for garlic.
