ABSTRACT
MULTIPLE COMPARISON PROCEDURES| ITS INDISCRIMINATE USE IN AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH

Luis Barrales V.1 y Fernando Silva F.2

A complete review of the contributions to the chilean scientific journal AGRICULTURA TÉCNICA, from 1965 to 1978, was carried out to detect and evaluate the indiscriminate use of Multiple Comparison Procedures.
In 31% of the papers the authors used one of these tests. In 50% of these, the multiple range tests were inapropiate for the tipe of data involved.
Typicla examples of misuse were selected and a more appropiate analysis whas indicated for each case. These examples gave evidence that the indiscriminate use of multiple comparison tests may result in a reduced efficiency in the interpretation of the experimental data.
