During the 1970-71 crop cycle four trials were eonducted to determine the effect of seeding dates and the aphid Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) over protein content and baking quality of the spring wheat cultivar Huelquen.
A split plotexperimental design was used. Treatments were three seeding dates and sub-treatments corresponded to plots with and without aphid control.
From the present study it was concluded that the aphid M. dirhodum and the late seeding date treatment increased grain protein percentage and microsedimentation value, and reduced hectoliter weight.
Late seeding dates increased grain hardness index and volume of bread; however crumb texture and colour of bread loaf and water absorption capacity did not differ signficantly among different seeding dates.
The quality factors mentioned aboye were not significantly modified by aphids.
