Effect of N-NH4 on nitrite accumula tionwas studies in 17 surface samplesof calcareous soils irrigated by the Mapocho-Maipo system (Santiago. Province-Chile).
100 ppm of N-NH4 (applied as diammonium phosphate) were added to each 50 gr of soil sample, humidity was adjusted to field capacity, and the samples were incubated at 24°C for periods ranging from 0 to 30 days.
Soil samples were analyzed for texture, pH,organic matter, dectric conductivity, carbonates and nitrites. Nitrite accumulation ranged from 0.6 to 25.5 ppm. Four days incubation gave the lighest nitrite values.
