ABSTRACT
EFFECT OF NITROGEN FERTILIZATION AND PLANT DENSITY IN GARLIC PRODUCTION

Inés Sotomayor R.1

Two field experiments with nitrogen fertilization and plant population density in garlie were carried out at the Experiment Station La Platina during the seasons 1971-72 and 1972-73.
Nitrogen fertilization and density of plantation are the two main faetors determining the yield and size of the garlic. The rates of N fertilization were 0-64-128-192-250 kilogramos of N/ha as Sodium Nitrate and the distanee of plantation along the line were 10 and 15 cm, that is 400.000 and 300.000 pIants per ha.
It was found that the yields raised with inereasing N fertiIization and a high density of plants. Raising the rates of N fertiIization raised the pereentage of garlie buIbs of good size whiIe inereasing density of pIantation Iowered this pereentage. On the Iower density of pIantation good size buIbs were obtained in a high pereentage even with Iow rates of nitrogen fertiIization.
The stored buIbs did not start sprout before JuIy or August with or without nitrogen fertilization.
