Some factors affecting phosphate fixation in allophane soils of Chile were studied. It was found that over 60% of added phosphate was fixed in the first 60 minutes. Fixation increases as the pH becomes more acid, depends on the P concentration and is described by the Freundlich isotherm. Sulfate and chloride ions do no compete wiht phosphates and, on the contrary, tend to increase P-fixation.
