For the first time in this country, one hundred strains from one hundred selected samples of chronic bovine mastitis cases were isolated. They came from cows in dairies in the Santiago area and from other sections of the country.
Streptococci strains were identified by classic methods and by the so called CAMP reaction. 20 per cent of them were alpha haemolysis; 57 per cent, alpha ptime and 23 per cent, indiferent. No beta haemolysis was observed.
Classical fermentative properties were verified.
As the presence of Str. agalactiae in Chile, was confirmed a research is underway to establish the incidence of this disease in our dairies.
