The effect of the use of various calcium, phosphorus, and nitrogen fertilizers is studied in relation to the yield of wheat grown in experimental plantations in Collipulli and Osorno and the content thereof in terms of water, fats, proteins, ash, calcium, phosphorus, iron and the vitamins thiamin and riboflavin.
In Collipulli, where the yield, phosphorus content, and the P2O5-ash ratio are very low, all fertilizers used greatIy improve these characteristics without, however, bringing them up to the national level. The thiamin content increases as the phosphorus content rises in the fertilizer and in the grain itself.
The samples from Osorno for the most part fall within the ranges established both for the country as a whole and for the zone itself. The various fertilizer formulas that· have been studied do not improve the internal quality of the wheat, and the apparently beneficial action of fertilizer on yields is less significant since the range of yields in the control is very wide.
The soil appears to be more important than fertilizer in determining the characteristics of wheat in the Collipulli and Osorno zones.
