A reconnaissance soil survey with details was made on Isla de Pascua (Easter Island) to obtain the basic data required for planning the most effective use of the Island's soil resources in order to maximize production of food. Six soil series were described. They have a common volcanic origin. Most of the soils showed a general laterization process, but there were exceptions on the site of former lagoons. A soil canservation survey described oqe plow soil groupand two soil groups that badly needed permanent conservation practices.
