In a group of guinea pigs which died spontaneously granulomatous lesions of characteristic mycosis were observed. These lesions were located especially in the kidneys.
From the kidney of one guinea pig (Cavia cobaya) a yeastlike fungi identified as Candida albicans (Ch. Robio 1853) Berkhout 1923, was isolated.
Experimental inoculations of the isolated fungi was made in different laboratory animals with the following results: 1) A rabbit with an intravenous injection died on the fourth day Granulomatous lesions were found in the kidneys and other organs; 2) A guinea pig with a subcutaneus injectian did not die and the only lesion was an abscess in the point of inoculation which healed in 30 days; 3) A guinea pig with intracardiacal injection died in 34 days, with renal and pericardincal lesions; 4) A rat inoculaied intravenously was sacrificed on the 14 the day and presented generalized lesions; 5) A rat incculated intratesticulary was also sacrificed on the 14 the days and presented lesions in the point of inoculation and other organs.
It was alway possible to isalate the original strain of the fungus fram the lesions of inoculated animals.
It was shown by comparison of the severity of lesions that rabbit was the most susceptible and guinea pig the most resistant to the injection of Candida albicans.
Histopathological studies of the lesions produced by Candida albicans showed that they were not specific, the lesions were similar to those described by Gougerot and other authors in different mycosis.
