Faba bean adaptability (Vicia faba L.) of Portuguesa-INIA variety for dry grain production and industry utilization in the north central area of Chile

Portuguesa-IN lA is a new faba bean (Vicia faba L.) cultivar obtained by selection within a Portuguese material introduced from Japan. This cultivar has shown a high yield potencial in locations of the north-central dryland areas during three growing seasons with dry grain yield up to 4100 kg/ha and a large seed size (14 grains/ounce). The green pod cannot be used for the Chilean fresh market because its small size (12-14 cm with 2-3 grains), but it tolerates allowing to obtain a high quality product.lt has 40-45% of industrial yield compared to 25-30% of the varieties used by the freezing industry.
This variety present characteristics of plant height, leaves and flowers colours, stam shattering, lodging and reaction to diseases similar to the growing cultivars in the country.
