In this review topics about the production of transgenic cereals in four species: wheat, rice, maize and barley are discussed, as well as the related technological breakthroughs obtained so faro The main difficulties faced in the transgenic cereal production are the inherent low regenerative ability of monocotyledonous tissues as well as the lack of high expression promoter genes for cereals crops. Furthermore, the advantages of the biolistic as a methodology for the production of transgenic plants in recalcitrant species are emphasized. The production of transgenic cereals certainly is a complementary contribution to conventional plant breeding.
