Oat-breeding influence on grain yield

Edmundo Beratto M.1

A brief historic account is given on the origins of the oat-breeding research programs in Chile, and their development at present. A list is provided with the oat varieties released through: a) introduction and selection of foreign materials; b) bulk and pure line selection of Chilean germoplasm; c) hybridization and selection of segregating material. The advances in grain yield and agronomic type, reached during the last 30 years, are also included.

Keywords: Avena saliva L., oat, plant breeding, variety, grain yield, agronomic type.
