During 1978, an onion selection program was started at La Platina Experimental Station (33º 30' S Lat.) from Valenciana local type, following the massing and selting selection method. In 1984 a higher yielding line was identitied, the L-210. Until 1991, it was included in yield trials at different planting dates. The line has shown uniform characteristics such as flattened-globe, brown bulbs and average size of 270 g ('Valenciana' corriente 214 g and 'Valenciana Platina' 209 g). It also shows a low percentage of sprouting in storage, and almost no bolting even if planted earlier (May) than normal date (June or July). The averageyield afterseven trials was 86.8ton ha-1. The selected line has been named 'Dorada-INlA'.
