ABSTRACT
New information to be considered in a bean breeding program in Chile

Bean is an important crop cultivated mainly by small and medium farmers. This species Iike other traditional crops faces competition and profitability problems as compared with other crops. One way to approach this propiem is to: by producing higher yielding varieties, reducing production cost, increasing quality and incorporating industrial processes tothe product. This paper reviews the current aims ofthe Bean Breeding Program at INIA, analizes the new information available and suggests a new strategy to develop new bean cultivars.
