During the 1991 crop season a disease was detected on faba bean fields of the VI region in Chile. The affected plants showed circular brown to black lesions on the leaves and occasionally similar symptoms on the stems. According to the symptomatology, cultural and morphological characteristics of the isolated fungus and the results of the pathogenicity test, it was concluded that Phoma medicaginis (Malbr. and Roum.) varo pinodella (Jones) Boerema was the causal agent of the disease affecting faba bean. Thls is the firSl report of the fungus affecting faba bean in Chile.
