The tolerance of lentil, cv. Araucana-INIA, to four grass systemic herbicides was evaluated at Carillanca Experimental Station (INIA), Temuco, Chile, during the 1986/87 and 1987/88 crop seasons. The herbicides evaluated were fluazifop-butyl, haloxyfop-methyl, quizalofop-ethyl, and sethoxydim using mineral oil as adjuvant, at rates of 0.525, 0.120, 0.120 and 0.276 kg/ha, respectively, at lentil growth stages V5/V6 (5 to 6 vegetative nodes), V10/V12 (10 to 12 vegetative nodes) and R1 (first bloom). Neither phytotoxic symptoms nor reduction in lentil seed yield were observed with quizalofopethyl, haloxyfop-methyl and setoxydim. However, evident chlorosis and necrotic symptoms developed on plants in all treatments with fluazifop-butyl. On the average, fluazifop-butyl reduced seed yield by 15% in 1986/87 and 23% in 1987/88 when compared with the weed free checks. Yield lo5ses were expresad on reductions in podsjplant in 1986/87, and on increases in improductive (empty) pods and lower seed weight in 1987/88.
