During thrpe seasons (1986/87 to 1988/89) 20 red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) cultivars were evaluated in an Andisol soil at Carillanca Research Station (INIA-Temuco). The objetive was to evaluate the yield, persistency and sanitary performance of introduced germoplasm in relation to the national cultivar Ouiñequeli bred by INIA-Chile between 1960 and 1962. The experiment was seeded in September, 1986, in a ramdomized block design with three replicates in plots of 2 x 6 m. Each one was seeded with the equivalent of 10 kg of seed/ha in lines separated 20 cm. The establishment fertilization was 52 and 42 kg/ha of Pand K, respectively and the maintenance fertilization in 1987/88 and 1988/89 was 26 and 20 kg/ha of Pand 21 and 42 kg/ha of K, respectively. The experiment was managed under cutting and irrigation conditions. The cultivar Quiñequeli yielded 8.7; 13.2 and 6.3 ton D.M./ha in the first, second and third seasons, respectively. The chilean cultivar and the introduced Tristán, Ottawa, Hungarololi, Arlington, Prospen I and Florex yielded better (P < 0.05) than the rest. Instead there were no yielding differences (P > 0.05) within these cultivars; Prospen 1, Tristan, Arlington and Florex showed better population density, (P < 0.05) than Ouiñequeli at the end of the experiment. On the other hand, Prospen 1, Tristan and Lakeland stood out because of their low incidence of Powdery Mildew (Erysiphe trifolii Grev.). These characteristics could be used in the future in the red clover Breeding Project of our Research Center.
