Root exudates from the undisturbed root system ofwild oat (Avena fatua L.) seedlings were collected by a modification of the Tang & Young method. Exudates inhibited root and coleoptile growth of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings. Scopoletin, coumarin, p-hydroxibenzoic and vanillic acid were identified from the root exudates by HPLC being scopoletin the main allelochemical determined.
